Having been under the limelight since the onset of the Karachi operation the Sindh government has yet again found itself stranded at the crossroads. With one opposition party facing a crackdown the other has lost all hope with respect to local bodies’ election.
Speaking to The News on Sunday, leader opposition Sindh assembly Shaheryar Maher, of the Pakistan Muslim League – Functional (PML-F), in response to the Supreme Court’s (SC) directive to hold the elections on September 20, 2015 said the decision would not be implemented on.
“The Sindh government will take the matter to the court and that would only cause a delay,” he opined.
Referring to the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) order to carry out delimitation of the constituencies, Maher expressing distrust said the party would be highly critical of the delimitation brought about by the Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP).
Maher in an earlier comment made regarding the PM’s indifference towards the interior Sindh during the latter’s visit to Karachi, said the Pir Pagara had expressed his reservations in a meeting, the issues would soon be resolved.
Another PML-N MPA Imtiaz Ahmed Sheikh said if the government failed to hold local body elections this time around it would be a contempt of court.
“The government has to provide all kinds of resources to the ECP for holding the elections.”
Responding at the complaints Speaker Sindh assembly and PPP Larkana division president, Agha Siraj Durrani, said the party had already begun preparations for the election.
He said the government was only awaiting ECP directives regarding local bodies’ elections.

MQM 90 raid
Maher while commenting on the raid at MQM headquarters said every citizen as well as political parties should appreciate the Rangers and the army fighting to eliminate terrorism.
He said the party should not create a hue and cry over the issue because they had
themselves demanded to hand over Sindh particularly Karachi to the army.
He said the MQM should have handed over the criminals earlier, “Criminals belonging to any party should be eliminated and awarded punishment.”
Speaking of the raid,
Durrani said the operation was started with the consensus of all political parties and the MQM should not object to it since terrorists were arrested from their headquarters.
Lauding the Army and Rangers he said the military was a prestigious institution and should not be maligned by anyone.
“Let terrorists be taken to the court of law and face trial, let the court decide their fate.”
He further informed that the MQM had submitted a requisition to convene an assembly session and as the speaker of the assembly he was studying the requisition and as per the law was bound to hold a session within 14 days.
It may be noted that local bodies’ elections in Sindh were last held in, 2005.
