Shoaib, Saqib reach ITF Pakistan World Junior quarters
KARACHI: Muhammad Shoaib and Saqib Hayat of National Tennis Academy stunned their opponents to advance to the quarter-finals in Tajammul Abbas ITF Pakistan World Junior Ranking Tennis Championships at PTF Tennis Complex, Islamabad, on Tuesday.
Ahmed Zyaan (Britain), Huzaifa Abdul Rehman, Chen Wei Chen (Taipei), Rattanan Siritaworchar (Thailand), Faisal Ghous (Canada) and Suresh Darrshan of Malaysia also moved into the quarter-finals.
In the second round, unseeded Shoaib of Pakistan caused a major upset when he eliminated 3rd Seed Neema Arthav of India 6-1, 6-2 by playing powerful game from the base line.He was in excellent form and did not allow his opponent to settle down throughout the match with his cross-court forehand and backhand shots.
The Indian player after losing the match broke his racket and was penalised from the ITF supervisor.Top seed Ahmed Zyaan of the UK eliminated Hamza Bin Rehan in a well-contested match 7-6(2), 6-3. Second seed Suresh of Malaysia eliminated Moosa Choudhry without any resistance with scores of 6-1, 6-2.
Qualifier Huzaifa Abdul Rehman made another upset in the tournament when he beat 6th Seed Nouman Aftab 6-3, 6-4.Saqib of Pakistan won his match against Wen Yi Chou (Taipei) 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Rattanan (Thailand) won his encounter against Ahmed Asjad Qureshi. Asjad was leading 5-2 in the final set but failed to maintain the pace. The Thai player not only leveled the score but also won the match in the tie break. The match lasted two hours and thirty minutes and the final score was 3-6, 7-6(8), 7-6(5).
Faisal Ghous from Canada registered 7-5, 6-1 win against Sami Zeb of Pakistan.
Chen Wei Chen (Taipei) beat Zalan Khan 6-1, 6-1.
In the first round of boys’ doubles, Nouman Aftab (PAK) and Yee Mathew (HKG) beat Sami Zeb Khan (PAK) and Subhan Bin Salik (PAK) 6-3, 7-5; Cheng Wei Chen (TPE) and Chou Wen Yi (TPE) beat Moosa Choudhary (PAK) and Zalan Khan (PAK) 6-0, 6-0.
Chang Cameron Austin (the US) and Cheng Hsuni Lui (TPE) got walkover against Shehryar Ahmed and Zaryab Khan (PAK); Muhammad Shoaib (PAK) and Saqib Hayat (PAK) beat Hamza Bin Rehan (PAK) and Ahmed Kamil (PAK) 7-5, 6-7(3), 10-8.
