The International Mother Language Day was observed on February 21 to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity. Many regional languages of Gilgit-Baltistan are on the verge of extinction. The prime reason is the mass migration of people towards urban areas in search of a better life.
Second, with the arrival of modern technology, people now prefer to communicate in English and Urdu due to the notion that these languages will get them good job prospects. Moreover, other regional languages like Punjabi, Pashto enjoy state patronage and different universities offer degree courses in these subjects as well. But the regional languages of GB do not have any state patronage and are therefore vulnerable. The Karakorum University, Gilgit should start a regional language research centre and also explore the possibility of offering degree courses as well.
