Chinese national killed in Karachi attack

KARACHI: A Chinese national was killed and a passerby sustained bullet wounds when unidentified assailants attacked his car near the Zamzama Park, DHA on Monday. The deceased was identified as 40-year-old Chen Zhu, a shipping executive. Zhu, along with another Chinese national Ye Fan, had come to the Neelum Colony opposite the Zamama Park for shopping when "a lone assailant" fired volleys of bullets at their car from the front. Chen Zhu who was on the driving seat was seriously injured in the attack, while Ye Fan remained unhurt. A pedestrian Qamar Abbas, 23, was also injured in the leg, the police said. SP Clifton Tauqeer Muhammad Naeem described the incident as "target killing".

The injured were first taken to a nearby private hospital from where they were rushed to Jinnah Hospital where the Chinese national died during treatment. According to Dr Seemin Jamali, Zhu received two bullets injuries to the head. DIG South Azad Khan said Zhu was MD M/s Cosco Saeed Shipping Karachi Pvt, while Ye Fan was a trainee officer. He said both left their office for lunch at the China Town from where they came to the Neelum Colony. According to police, the shipping company is a non-CPEC firm operating in Pakistan since 1990.

Investigations are underway, SP Naeem said, adding “Police found nine empties of 9mm from the crime scene which had been sent for forensic examination.” The IG Sindh, AD Khowaja, ordered registration of case at the CTD and appointed Umer Khattab as the Investigation Officer of the case.

Sindh Home Minister Sohail Siyal visited the Jinnah Hospital. Briefing newsmen at the JPMC, he said the Chinese nationals were given security, but they were not carrying security staff with them. He said the police are conducting inquiry, and hoped the criminals would be arrested soon. He directed DIG Azad Khan to submit a report to him immediately.
