A Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) operative wanted for several extortion cases was arrested by the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) during a raid in the Malir area on Monday.
CTC chief Khurram Waris told The News that an informant had tipped them off about the presence of Naeem Nasir, a close associate of TTP’s city commander Sher Zaman Mehsud, in Malir.
“We raided the identified hideout and, after an intense gunfight, managed to arrest Naeem, though his accomplices escaped,” said Waris.
A pistol was recovered from Naeem’s possession and the suspect was shifted to the investigation unit where he acknowledged that he used to collect extortion money from the truck stand area of Hub and Sohrab Goth.
“The money was sent to Sher Zaman on a monthly basis. Interrogations are underway and we will have more information soon,” said Waris.
On Friday last week, the Sindh Rangers had arrested seven suspects, including members of banned outfits, in raids conducted across the city. A spokesperson said the paramilitary force raided the hideouts of banned outfits in SITE and North Karachi and arrested four terrorists. Their weapons were seized. He added that Rangers also conducted raids in Clifton, Landhi and Labour Sqaure and rounded up three criminals including target killers.
Car snatchers held
The Anti-Car Lifting Cell (ACLC) busted an inter-provincial gang of car snatchers in a raid in the Sachal area. SSP Irfan Ali Bahadur said three criminals were apprehended in
the operation and a stolen car was also found in their possession. Equipment including punching digits dye and other materials were also recovered and officials said more stolen cars were expected to be found from locations in interior Sindh.
Another inter-province gang was busted by the ACLC and suspects identified as Tahir, Ayaz, Bilal, Shah Jehan, Waqar and Khan were arrested. Eight snatched motorcycles were also recovered and further investigations were underway.
