The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) on Thursday sent 72 hours’ notice to the owners of car showrooms located on New M A Jinnah Road, Khalid Bin Walid Road and other areas to remove vehicles parked on roads and pavements.
The notice comes in the wake of directives from Sindh Minister for Local Government Sharjeel Memon.
The owners have been warned that in case of no response within the stipulated time the municipal authority will seize the vehicles parked in the unauthorised areas under the anti-encroachment bylaws and the owners will have to pay heavy fines, a KMC official said on Thursday.
The minister had inspected the abovementioned corridors during a visit to the city and instructed Metropolitan Commissioner Masood Alam that action be taken as the vehicles parked at on roads and pavements were creating traffic jams and trouble for the citizens, he further said.
Memon had said that the showroom owners had no right to use the roads and pavements for parking their vehicles and all encroached areas should be immediately cleared.
Meanwhile, the KMC has also taken strict notice of the materials and debris lying scattered in front of the under-construction buildings on Khalid Bin Walid Road and other roads of the city.
The owners of all such buildings have been served on notices for immediate removal of these materials.
The metropolitan commissioner has ordered the anti-encroachment department to form more teams to accelerate the ongoing operation against illegal hoardings and encroachments in the metropolis.
Illegal hoardings
The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation has removed more than 150 illegal hoardings in the last five days.
The corporation has launched an operation against the signboards installed in violation of advertisement bylaws, a KMC official said on Thursday.
The KMC’s Local Taxes Department had removed over 120 illegal hoardings from Khyaban-e-Saadi, Khyaban-e-Roomi and Khyaban-e-Iqbal in Clifton whereas 15 hoardings each were removed alongside Shara-e-Quaideen and University Road.
The action against illegal hoardings is part of the ongoing “Green and Clean city” campaign aimed at maintaining Karchi’s beauty.
Meanwhile, the KMC’s anti-encroachments department removed all encroachments beneath and around the Banaras flyover.
Land grabbers tried to resist the move but the timely action of police foiled their attempt, a KMC official said.
The space cleared would be used for tree plantation purpose, he said.
The anti-encroachment officials during this action removed many wooden and iron cabins and counters, pushcarts, bird cages and other items and deposited them at in the KMC store, he told the media.
