A bootlegger who was selling alcohol in the city’s Defence Housing Authority (DHA) area was arrested by a team of the District South police on Monday. District South SSP Jawed Akbar Riaz said police had received multiple complaints from residents of the area about a group of people selling smuggled foreign liquour in the locality.

The residents, as per the officer, had told police that the gang would operate in a car; the customers would drive up next to their vehicle and the bootleggers would hand over the bottle from the window and take the money. The gang would also provide deliveries at specific places on customers’ requests.

A team led by the SSP conducted a raid in DHA and, after resistance, managed to arrest a suspect identified as Kaheem Chand and impounded his vehicle, a Honda Civic (APQ-555). The officer said 50 bottles of foreign liquor was found in the car and a case was registered against the suspect. More raids were being carried out to arrest other members of the gang.

MQM-London worker arrested

A political party’s worker was among two people arrested by the Sindh Rangers in raids on Monday. As per a statement issued by the paramilitary force, Rangers personnel conducted an intelligence-driven raid in the city’s Zaman Town area to apprehend a political party’s activist who was wanted in multiple cases.

The Rangers team met resistance as they approached the area but eventually managed to arrest the suspect, who was identified as Mohammed Haseeb. Haseeb, said to be an activist of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-London (MQM-L), was wanted for involvement in terrorism cases and other heinous crimes. In another raid, the Rangers arrested a drug dealer, identified as Rafiq Jan, in the city’s Gulshan-e-Maymar area. Jan was said to be operating a drug den in the locality. Weapons and narcotics were seized in the raids and both accused were later handed over to local police for further legal proceedings.
