An anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Friday acquitted a former sector incharge of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, Shakil alias Baba, in a case pertaining to possession of illegal arms and explosive material.
The court noted that the prosecution had failed to prove the charges against the accused.
Shakil alias Bab was arrested by the Rangers in June, 2015 during an operation and it was alleged that the man had his involvement in the target killings of around 46 people in the city. The Rangers’ investigators had obtained permission from the court concerned to keep Shakil under custody for 90 days.
A former sector incharge of MQM’s North Nazimabad unit, Shakil was also alleged to have his involvement in extorting huge sums from the citizens. He was also accused of possessing illegal arms and explosive material.
It was claimed that Shakil had informed the interrogators about presence of a huge quantity of illegal arms and explosive material which were recovered from the city’s New Karachi area.
It may be mentioned here that the Shakil’s custody had been handed over to the police till October 5 in the murder case of Muhammed Khan Chachar, director of the Fishermen Cooperative Society, by an ATC when he was produced before it on the completion of his 90-day detention by the Rangers.
The paramilitary force’s law officer had submitted in the court that the suspect had confessed to having his involvement in targeted killing of 46 people before a joint interrogation team.
