The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Social Research Development Organisation (SRDO) to develop and run the first-of-its-kind 'Road Safety Park' in Karachi.
As per a press release, the agreement was signed in a meeting held at the KMC head office on Thursday. Karachi Mayor Waseem Akhtar and SRDO CEO Abdul Qadir Balu signed the document.
The meeting was also attended by parks committee chairman Khurram Farhan, works committee chairman Hasan Naqvi, traffic SSP South Aijaz Ali Shaikh and senior KMC officers. The mayor regretted that Pakistan had not been listed in the countries which celebrate ‘World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims’ that takes place on the third Sunday in November every year and it had been adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2005.
Under this agreement, the SRDO will be provided with park premises without any charge to develop the Road Safety Park where road safety and traffic awareness training sessions and programmes would be held for citizens without any fee.
Initially, this agreement is for one year which could be extended with mutual consent of both the parties. The KMC would have no financial involvement in this project. The mayor said Karachi would be included in such metropolitan cities of the world where Road Safety Parks had been developed by the municipal authorities to provide useful knowledge to citizens. He expressed hope that this would help minimize the number of traffic accidents in the city.
Eid Milad-un-Nabi arrangements
Sindh Governor Mohammad Zubair on Thursday chaired a meeting to review the security arrangements being made in the metropolis for Eid Milad-un-Nabi. The meeting was attended by Karachi Mayor Waseem Akhter, Sindh police chief AD Khowaja, Karachi Additional IG Mushtaq Ahmad Mahar, religious leaders and officials from other relevant departments.

Zubair said the masses could never forget the sacrifices made by the cops and law enforcers for the country. Acknowledging the cooperation extended by the religious scholars, he urged them to play their role in forging unity among the people and promoting the virtues of peace, tolerance and sacrifice.
The Sindh police officials were asked to particularly ensure the security along with adequate arrangements for alternative traffic routes so the commuters may not face any difficulty. The governor also asked the KE officials to keep the city administration updated about arrangements being made to meet additional power load during the month of Rabiul Awal. He also directed the local government officials to ensure adequate cleanliness across the metropolis.
