Scholars urged to undertake result-oriented research

SWABI: Former chairman of Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission Dr Ishfaq Ahmad said that 21st century demanded hi-tech engineers being capable of tackling poverty, ignorance and underdevelopment.

He was addressing the induction ceremony of the fresh students in Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology on Saturday. 

Academia and students participated in the gathering.

About 500 undergraduate students from all over the country joined different disciplines of engineering and management sciences at GIK Institute.

Shakil Durrani, Executive Director of Society for the Promotion of Engineering Sciences and Technology in Pakistan and Pro-Rector (Admin and Finance) Ahsan Baseer Sheikh also attended the ceremony.

On the occasion, the GIK Institute dedicated Faculty of Electrical Engineering to Dr Ishfaq for his distinguished services in the field of science and technology.

The participants presented standing ovation to Dr Ishfaq on both occasions when he was entering and leaving the auditorium.

Dr Ishfaq said the students must know about their potential and field of interest in which they could really excel and contribute to country’s economic progress.

“Once you have determined your strengths and fixed your goals, you will have to make untiring efforts to achieve them,” he said.

Dr Ishfaq, who is well-known nuclear physicist, said that Pakistan was a developing country and it needed competent and motivated manpower.

He said the institution, which you had joined, offered courses of international standards. “The labs are of high standard and the faculty is dedicated and qualified,” he said.

He said that research was another area that demanded full attention and commitment. “We need advanced and sophisticated technologies. Pakistan should develop indigenous technology with determined and continuous research work,” he stressed.

“We must conduct result-oriented research to develop our industrial and economic sectors,” he maintained.

Engr Shamsul Mulk, president of Society for the Promotion of Engineering Sciences and Technology in Pakistan said, “GIK Institute would use all available facilities to enable students to become excellent engineers to work for economic progress of the country.”

Jehangir Bashar, Rector GIK Institute said, “Our very competent faculty is here to teach and guide you. We are fortunate to have a faculty that is truly world class and committed to the pursuit of excellence.”

He said, “We want you to use and enjoy the excellent facilities at GIK Institute. But we will not tolerate misuse. We will not let you disturb this neat, clean, functional and serene environment,” he said.

Prof, Dr Javed A. Chattha, Pro-Rector (Academic) said, “We know what kind of engineers should be produced in the 21st century.”
