Two plainclothes officials of the Karachi police were given a thrashing by citizens on Martin Road when they arrived there in a private vehicle and tried to take a man along with them.
SI Kamran Shah and ASI Akhtar Jatt, both posted in the investigation section of Gulistan-e-Jauhar police station, reached at Martin Road within the remit of PIB police station, in a private vehicle in plain clothes. They tried to take an accused identified as Shakeel, who is nominated in a case (FIR no 82/15) at the Gulistan-e-Jauhar police station, when he started shouting for help, claiming that he was being kidnapped by armed men.
His shouts for help grabbed the attention of passersby who came to his rescue and began beating the policemen up. As the law enforcers were being brutally beaten by a mob, Shakeel managed to slip away from the scene.
A contingent from the PIB police station arrived at the spot and rescued SI Kamran Shah and ASI Akhtar Jatt. The officials then disclosed to the PIB police that they had come to the area to arrest a suspect wanted in a case registered at the Gulistan-e-Jauhar police station.
According to Gulshan-e-Iqbal Abid Qaimkhani, since both the policemen were in civil clothes the residents mistook them for kidnappers and therefore subjected to torture.
He said Shakeel had been wanted in a fraud case with four others, Imtiaz, Naveed, Afshan and Rashid Mughal. He said the case had been registered by Santosh when a cheque he had received from them bounced.
SP Qaimkhani said DSP PIB Colony had been tasked with the investigation of the incident and report back to the authorities.
Officials suspended
On the other hand, SI Kamran Shah and ASI Akhtar Jatt were booked in a case (FIR no 18/15) at the PIB police station under Section 342/34 of the Pakistan Penal Code at the PIB police station and suspended from duty, said SP Gulshan Qaimkhani.
SSP Investigation for district East Zulfiqar Mahar said both policemen had violated the protocol of conducting raids and the city police’s standard operating procedure.
He said the use of a private vehicle and civil clothes for making an arrest was forbidden and reflected badly on the Karachi Police and an inquiry was being conducted in this regard.
He said conducting raids in civil clothes put the lives of both law enforcers in jeopardy who were lucky to have been saved in time by the PIB police.
