AFP constitution to be amended

KARACHI: The general council of the Athletics Federation of Pakistan (AFP) agreed on Sunday that the constitution of the federation should be amended in line with the statutes of the international athletics governing body (IAAF).

The house also approved a committee under the chairmanship of Brig Ghazanfar Ali which will incorporate in the AFP constitution the amendments indicated in the latest IAAF and Asian Athletics Association (AAA) constitutions.

The AFP general council meeting was held at the Pakistan Sports Complex, Islamabad, with its president Maj Gen Sahi in the chair.A senior AFP official told ‘The News’ after the meeting that the constitution would be brought thoroughly in line with the statutes of the IAAF.

He said the amended draft of the constitution would be tabled before the general council for formal approval.

Meanwhile, Shahida Khanum (Punjab) was elected as president of the Pakistan Women Athletics Association (PWAA) in elections on Sunday.The office-bearers elected include Abida Tanveer (secretary), Shahina Ishtiaq (treasurer) and Humaira Mehmood (senior-vice president).

The house also formed an athletes’ commission comprising international athletes Liaquat Ali, Mohsin Ali, Rabia Ashiq and Maria Maratab.

The house was also briefed about the fastest men and women competitions held at Faisalabad, Peshawar and Karachi in the current year besides all other events of the national and international calendar.

The house was also informed about Pakistan’s future international engagements.Sahi said that the integrity of the office-bearers should be above any suspicion. He said he expected all office-bearers to cooperate and coordinate with media and sponsors for better future of athletics.

Sahi instructed all athletics associations to support the recognized and renowned athletics academies in their areas and encourage their efforts. Sahi, a former international athlete, warned that if any athlete was found involved in doping he or she would be banned for life.
