Navy clinch Parvez Abbasi Open Shooting C’ship title

KARACHI: The first edition of the Parvez Abbasi Open Shooting Championship concluded at the Pakistan Navy Shooting Range, PNS Karsaz, here on Sunday, with the hosts Navy capturing the title after securing 34 gold medals in a total of 44 events.

They also captured 36 silver and 19 bronze medals.Their closest rivals were Sindh, who clinched five gold, three silver and 16 bronze medals. PAF secured third place on the podium with four gold, three silver and two bronze medals.

On the final day, 16 medals were up for grabs in Air Rifle (Women Junior), Air Rifle (Women Youth), Air Rifle (Men), Air Rifle (Women), Big Bore Pistol, Big Bore Pistol Men Professional (Rapid), .22 Rifle Telescopic Sight and Trap Olympic.

A colourful ceremony was organised at the conclusion of the competitions. Askara Abbasi, the wife of late Parvez Abbasi, was the chief guest.Speaking on the occasion, Commodore Ghazanfar Abbas, Event Director of the Championship, praised the shooters for participating in the event.

“The inaugural Parvez Abbasi Open Shooting Championship was a big success. It was a mega event in which teams participated from all across Pakistan. We are already looking forward to the 2nd edition of the Championship. We will build on this success and everybody will see an even bigger event next time. I would like to take the opportunity to thank Mrs Parvez Abbasi and the family of late Parvez Abbasi without whose support the event would not have been made possible” he said.

Parvez Abbasi Open Shooting Championship was launched to celebrate the life and achievements of Parvez Abbasi, the founding Secretary of the National Rifle Association and one of the key drivers of the sport of shooting in Pakistan. —PPI
