PESHAWAR: Students from the tribal areas staged protest against a private television channel and its anchor Aamir Liaquat Hussain here on Sunday and asked the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) to take notice of the derogatory language he used about Wazir tribe of Pakhtuns.

Under the banner of Waziristan Students Society (WSS), Peshawar University campus, the protesting students warned of launching a protest movement if the state institutions including Pemra failed to take action against the channel and its anchor for airing a programme in which he used objectionable remarks against Wazir tribe.

The student leaders including WSS Peshawar University president Zubair Mehsud, Islamia College University president Zahoor Said Wazir and Agricultural University president Attaullah Wazir said that the anchor proved himself a slave by quoting a British-era controversial gazette. They alleged that Aamir Liaquat held a fake doctorate degree and was unaware of history and sacrifices of the tribal people. The youth warned of besieging the channel vehicles throughout the province and tribal areas if action was not taken and the controversial programme of the anchor was not closed.
