MINGORA: Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) head Senator Sirajul Haq said on Monday his party would resist any move to amend the Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution.

Speaking at a public meeting in Kalam in Swat, he said the appointees to key government positions must have the characteristics defined under the Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution.

The JI chief called for across-the-board accountability after the disqualification of Nawaz Sharif in the Panama Papers leaks case.

He said that the co-chairman of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and former President Asif Ali Zardari and military ruler General (R) Pervez Musharraf should be made accountable for their corruption and for abrogating the Constitution.

The JI chief said that the people would term the decision against Nawaz Sharif political victimisation if others named in the Panama Papers case and involved in corruption were spared.

Sirajul Haq said that Musharraf should return to the country instead of issuing statements to the media from abroad. He predicted that Musharraf would land in the Adiala jail in Rawalpindi if he returned to Pakistan.

The JI chief said that corruption could not be eliminated until all the corrupt were held accountable. He said that land, sugar and drug mafia in Pakistan had made the people hostage.

He said that JI was not against anyone but wanted all those involved in corruption to be held accountable.

About the Supreme Court verdict against Nawaz Sharif, Sirajul Haq said that it was divine justice. He said that Allah Almighty had given several opportunities to Nawaz Sharif but he failed to mend his ways and betrayed the nation.

He alleged that Nawaz Sharif had committed treason by trying to improve relations with India.

“India carried out attacks in Pakistan and violated ceasefire agreements at the border but Nawaz Sharif sent gifts of mango to India,” he alleged.
