Karachi Mayor Waseem Akhtar held the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) responsible for the collapse of a building early on Tuesday morning in Liaquatabad No 9 which left five people dead.
Talking to the media following a visit to the ill-fated building’s site, the mayor called for an impartial inquiry into the incident and demanded that all officials responsible for the disaster be held accountable.
“All officers responsible should be taken to task and awarded punishment as per the law,” said the city mayor.
Akhtar further asked the SBCA to conduct a detailed survey of all dangerous buildings in the city and take swift measures for the safety of people residing in them.
Expressing his condolences to families whose loved ones perished in the accident, mayor Karachi ordered for special care to be taken of those injured.
The mayor ordered SBCA Director General Agha Maqsood Abbas to provide complete details of the incident. He also demanded to put a stop to all ongoing constructions of buildings violating SBCA rules and regulations.
The DG was asked by the city mayor to take action against all officers responsible for the building collapse. Furthermore, chairman of Bahria Town, Malik Riaz, contacted the Karachi Mayor and announced a monetary compensation of Rs1 million to families of the deceased. The real estate tycoon also conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families.
