ATC issues NBWs against five police officials for no-show

A local court reserved its order in the bail matter of former Muttahida Qaumi Movement leader Saleem Shehzad in two cases. He is accused of being involved in a murder case and in another case relating to riots and ransacking.

A case of murder of Shoaib Ullah was registered against Shehzad in 1992 at the Landhi police station. He is facing four cases being heard by different subordinate courts. He has already obtained bail in two cases registered at different police stations in the Malir locality.

In one of the cases registered at the Landhi police station, the complainant is the sister of Mohajir Qaumi Movement-Haqiqi chief Afaq Ahmed.

Shehzad is also facing a terrorism case at an anti-terrorism court (ATC) along with Karachi Mayor Waseem Akhtar, Anis Qaimkhani, Rauf Siddiqui, Abdul Qadir Patel, Dr Asim Hussain and others.

The Additional District & Sessions Court (South) has now reserved ruling in the bail matter of two cases being heard against Shehzad.

NBWs for cops

Hearing the cases against some activists of a banned outfit at a court housed at the central prison, an ATC judge issued non-bailable warrants (NBWs) for the arrest of five police officials who had failed to appear in court.

The court ordered the SSP (East) to arrest the Jamshed Quarters police station’s Inspector Waheed Awan, Sub-Inspector Dilawar Hussain, SI Perwaiz, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Khizar Hayat and ASI Nizamullah, and produce them in court on June 7.

Accused Syed Abu Turab Ali and Faisal Mehmood are facing charges of killing a citizen named Abdur Rehman in 2013.

The police officers were directed to appear in court and provide evidence against the two suspected killers but they were a no-show.

26 MQM workers indicted

An anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Wednesday indicted 26 Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) workers on charges of possessing illegal arms and explosive materials.

The accused were rounded up in a raid at the MQM’s headquarters, Nine Zero, on March 11, 2015.

The court indicted the detained workers while entertaining an amended charge-sheet merging other similar cases into one major case. The accused include Ubaid alias Ubaid K2, Shabbir alias Farhan Mullah, Nadir Shah, Faisal alias Faisal Motta - convicted of murdering Journalist Wali Khan Babar -, Amir alias Amir Sarphatta, Shakeel Banarsi and Amir alias Amir Teli and several others.

All the accused, however, denied the charges after which the court fixed June 13 for recording statements of prosecution’s witnesses against the detained accused.
