Fata reforms

By our correspondents

The inclusion of Fata into the country’s mainstream politics is once again delayed. These tribal areas are being governed by the FCR introduced by the British. So many years have been passed, but the government couldn’t repeal the outdated draconian law. Reforms in Fata are the need of the hour. However, the passage of the bill is being delayed because of the opposition of political parties.

If the situation persists, the matter will keep getting delayed. The government should hold a referendum in the region. Let the people of Fata decide what they want.

August will celebrate the 71st anniversary of the country’s independence. One would have thought that all outdated laws and regulations would have been done away within a few years of independence. However, for people of Fata, this isn’t the case. Under the FCR, the people of Fata have no right to appeal against the decision of a political agent. If a political agent decides that a tribe is guilty of a crime and as a punishment its house should be demolished, there is nothing the tribe can do.

Why are the people of Fata treated this way? The people of Fata are Pakistani citizens. It is time the government took the step to merge Fata with KP. There will be a few people who would oppose the decision, but this step is necessary. This matter should not be delayed further.
