The US Consulate organised a local government capacity-building workshop on Monday for recently-elected local government officials from Sindh, with a focus on the districts of Larkana, Sukkur, Thatta, Malir and Badin.
MJ Khan, a former three-time Houston City Council member, conducted the virtual workshop from the United States and enlightened the participants about the local government system in the US.
He briefed them on how revenue generation, legislation, communication & coordination, human resource management & administration and community engagement ensure smooth running of local governments.
Speaking the participants, Consul General Grace Shelton said local government played a vital role in strengthening democratic political systems as the locally elected officials were best placed to voice their constituents’ concerns. “You all understand the local population better than anyone and are closer to the issues,” she noted.
Salman Murad Baloch, chairman of District Council, Malir, Karachi; Arsalan Shaikh, mayor of Sukkur; Aslam Shaikh, mayor of Larkana; Shehryar Wassan, chairman of the District Council, Khairpur; and dozens of other elected members, government officials and journalists attended the workshop.
