The number of stray dogs is increasing rapidly. The solution that the government has is to brutally kill these dogs. According to some media reports, in Lahore, the Public Health Department launched a campaign to kill 5,000 stray dogs. In 2009, 27,576 dogs were killed within the city of Lahore. In 2005, this number was 34,942. In 2012, after 900 dogs were killed in the city of Multan, the Animal Safety Organisation in Pakistan sent a letter to the chief minister recommending that stray dogs should be vaccinated rather than killed.
These dogs should not be killed and should be sent to shelter homes. There are only a few shelter homes in the country. The government can fund these non-profit organisations so that they can help provide care to these homeless animals.
