LAHORE

A hot day with partly cloudy weather was observed in the city on Thursday while Met Office predicted similar weather conditions for the next 24 hours.

Met officials said a shallow westerly wave was present over northern parts of the country. They predicted that mainly hot and dry weather was expected in most plain areas of the country. However, light rain-thunderstorm with gusty winds is expected at a few places in Malakand, Makran divisions, upper FATA, Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir.

Met officials said that El Niño, one of the global climate drivers, was developing and it was likely to be in peak phase in the autumn 2017 while Indian Ocean Dipole is forecast to swing within normal limits throughout the summer season. These forces play important role in modification of seasonal weather in the region.

They said that following the ongoing season, northern half of the country was expected to receive slightly above-normal precipitation while 3–4 spells of thunderstorm-rain and isolated hailstorms associated with windstorm were predicted in Upper Punjab, AJK, KP and adjoining areas of Gilgit-Baltistan. They added that hot and dry conditions with chances of dust/thunderstorms would prevail in the southern half of the country where temperatures were likely to remain slightly above normal.

On Thursday, rainfall was recorded in some cities, including Dir, 10mm, Lower Dir, 6, Kakul, Mirkhani, 2, Drosh, 1, Muzaffarabad 4, Garhi Dupatta and Rawalakot, 02. Thursday’s highest temperature was recorded at Sukkar and Mithi where mercury reached 44°C. In Lahore maximum temperature was 36°C and minimum 22°C. Humidity was 18 percent.
