An Accountability Court (AC) on Friday sentenced two former town municipal officers (TMOs) to jail for seven years each for corruption of over Rs35 million.

The two TMOs jailed for seven years are Mazhar Ali and Mumtaz Ali, while another co-accused, Ghulam Hussain Samoon, was sentenced to prison for two years.

Another co-accused, Muhammad Wasif, was acquitted by the court as the prosecution failed to prove the corruption charges against him.

The convicts, the court held, had misused their powers and misappropriated funds allocated for development works in different cities of District Sujawal and others.

The court directed Mazhar and Mumtaz to deposit half of the embezzled amount as fine, declaring that non-payment would translate into an additional two-year jail sentence.

As for Ghulam Hussain Samoon, the court directed him to deposit Rs9,26,000 as fine.

The three convicts have been disqualified from serving on any public post in the future and would not be entitled to acquire bank loans for at least 10 years.
