Elected councillors blast WSSP for ‘zero performance’

PESHAWAR: A meeting convened by the Water and Sanitation Services Peshawar (WSSP) to apprise the local government representatives of its performance witnessed rumpus as the elected councillors blasted the civic body for what they termed its ‘zero performance’.

The meeting was arranged at the main office of WSSP. The elected representatives of the district government had been invited to make them part of the water supply, cleanliness drive and provision of other civic amenities.

Secretary local government and rural development Jamaluddin Shah was the chief guest on the occasion. The elected members from 45 union councils had been invited to the meeting. Some 200 councillors turned up on the occasion. Prominent among them were Nazim Town-2 Faridullah, Naib Nazim Town-3 Abdul Wahab Khalil and others.

At the very outset of the meeting when chief executive officer of WSSP Engineer Khanzeb started his power-point presentation, the participants started chanting slogans against the company. The elected representatives condemned the WSSP for what they called its poor performance. They alleged that the company had become a white elephant.

They said that the company should be dissolved and its powers given to the town administration and local government representatives.The participants after chanting slogans staged boycott of the meeting. They threatened to stage protest outside the Chief Minister’s House if their problems were not resolved.

Talking to reporters after the incident, the protesting councillors said that the WSSP was confined to the GT Road and Hayatabad only. The situation in other parts of the city was pathetic, they added.

The councillors maintained that the company has badly failed to ensure enough supply of clean drinking water to the people of the provincial metropolis. They were of the opinion that the employees of WSSP were given heavy salaries and lavish perks, but their performance was zero.
