For a smooth flow of two-way traffic at Submarine Chowrangi, an underpass will be constructed by the Sindh government, PPI learnt on Friday.
The development work is expected to start in the second week of April and will be completed by the end of June, official sources said.
The cost of the project is estimated to be worth Rs600 million. After the completion of the underpass, traffic at Submarine Chowrangi will be signal-free.
The Sindh local bodies department is working on the project under the Karachi Development Package. An engineer associated with the project said that traffic jams had become a routine at the intersection during the rush hours, and it took commuters six minutes to cross the place.
Due to the heavy flow of traffic, especially heavy vehicles, commuters often get stuck in snarl-ups.
The engineer said that in the first phase, the construction work would be started on one track, which would be closed for traffic, and motorists would be diverted towards Clifton. For developing the alternative way, the footpath would be demolished, he said.
Official sources also said that the development worked would be carried out 24 hours a day to complete the project in time.
They further said that storm-water drains would also be developed on both sides. The length of the underpass will be 750 meters.
