Karachi Mayor Waseem Akhtar has said that Sir Syed Government Girls College in Nazimabad has a tradition of imparting quality education and its problems will be resolved on a preferential basis.

Speaking as chief guest in a debate contest held at the college on Wednesday, he said it had become mandatory to provide better education to girls in society.

The mayor said the repairing of the road and the pavement outside the college and the removal of encroachments would be done soon.

He said the Sir Syed College was one of the key higher educational institutions “for our children and this college has maintained its standard”.

Later, talking to media representatives, Akhtar said he wanted to help the government to solve the problems of Karachi. Heaps of garbage were lying everywhere in the city and the government was not doing anything to remove them, he added. He said the Supreme Court had given another opportunity to the Sindh government to bring improvement to Karachi by providing basic necessities to the people.

“They should now by implementing the court’s order give the powers to the municipal bodies so that these could serve the citizens in a better way.”

Earlier, the college principal, Professor Tanvir Khalid, said in his welcome address that the students were facing difficulties   due to development works being carried out around the college and the illegal market along the college wall had become a security concern.  She also cited the problem of stray dogs on the college premises.
