Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has extended felicitations to the newly-elected office-bearers of the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) and assured them of full cooperation from his party for the protection of journalists and freedom of press.
In a congratulation message to Afzal Butt and Ayub Jan Sarhandi, who were elected as president and general secretary of the PFUJ in elections held in Quetta, Bilawal eulogised the journalist fraternity for upholding and strengthening democratic traditions among their cadres.
Media persons had a greater role to play in promoting democracy in the country to create a society based on justice and fair play, he added.
The PPP chairman said every segment of the country needed unity and brotherhood to promote a culture of tolerance and patience, while the journalist community had a special responsibility of maintaining a balance in coverage and reporting.
Media literacy was the key to a vibrant media and its readership/viewers, who might be well-educated to differentiate between news, propaganda and media-trial, he added.
Bilawal said that elections of the PFUJ body at this juncture were of immense importance, and hoped the newly-elected body would take into account its responsibilities for these challenges with an open heart.
He asked the PFUJ president and general secretary to convey his felicitations to all other elected office-bearers, including the Federal Executive Council.
