The general rule is that an industry shouldn’t be set up in a residential area. The contravention of the rule in Rawalpindi has created a lot of problems for residents. A factory of a multinational manufacturer of beverages is situated near a housing scheme in Chaklala. It has been observed that the factory, apart from generating an unbearable smell from its various processes, is now a constant source of an ear-piercing sound from its machinery running almost the whole day and night. The sound resembles an all-clear siren just nearby. This factory is polluting the environment.
The Environmental Protection Agency is requested to visit the site of the factory, gauge its distance from the housing scheme and – after a thorough investigation – take appropriate action. The best way is to shift the factory from the centre to the distant outskirts of the city.
