Back to the dark ages

Following the events of Brexit and the US polls, it has become obvious that the conservative elements are rapidly becoming a part of the political scenario of Western countries. International relations experts have viewed this trend as a form of neo-conservatism that contrasts with liberalism since Europeans, after passing through the dark ages, were promoters of liberal ideas. They were ardent supporters of democracy, equality and liberty.

However, at present, the political situation is quite different. Widespread support for the Brexit call in the UK and the victory of Donald Trump in the US made it clear that the people of the west have become averse to progressive views. The demands to oust minorities and immigrants, and a ban on wearing the veil, present a chilling evidence of their conservative behaviour. In the near future, it is likely that nationalistic feelings based on racism will flare up in the US and Europe. This will not only pose a conundrum for minorities and other groups, but will also produce catastrophic repercussions for Western countries as it might lead them back to the path of the dark ages.
