Following the immediate closure of liquor shops in the province on court orders, the Sindh government has forewarned the police of a menacing situation that could arise out of a likely increase in the distillation, sale and consumption of homemade alcohol, which could be toxic and fatal.

A letter, issued the excise, taxation & narcotics control department on Thursday, directed the inspector general of police to take stock of the situation and take measures immediately to preempt such a situation.

The section officer’s letter states that on the orders of the Sindh High Court, all licensed wine shops had been closed immediate effect.

It says: “I am further directed to state that use of illicit liquor may increase as the habitual person may use illicit liquor which is quite poisonous for their health and precious life.

“It is, therefore, requested to activate the concerned police officials to enhance their vigilance and [take the] necessary action over the business of manufacturing and sale of illicit liquor within their respective jurisdiction to avoid untoward incidents claiming precious human lives. The matter may kindly be given top priority in the best of interest of human lives.”

Excise, Taxation, & Narcotics Director General Muhammad Shoaib Siddiqui has issued orders for the shutting down liquor shops in the province following the court orders.

He has directed all regional directors to ensure the closure of all wine shops without fail and ensure the fulfillment of all legal formalities while taking action.
