Climate change

By our correspondents
September 27, 2016

This refers to the news report, ‘Pakistan amongst top ten’ (Sept 19). Based on the report of the Global Change Impact Studies Centre (GCISC), the article states that Pakistan is among those top ten countries which experience intense climate change frequently. This intense climate change is because of excess of carbon dioxide and other green-houses gases in the atmosphere which causes floods, draughts and heatwaves. It is anticipated that in the coming decade, Pakistan’s average temperature will grow rapidly compared to the average global temperature.

Pakistan is an agricultural country but its politicians are against the formation of dams. No major dam has been constructed since 1976, increasing the likelihood of floods. Moreover, the government is not carrying out plantation of trees on a large scale. Tree plantation is essential in reducing the destruction caused by floods. The government should carry out adequate reforms to curb the threats created by rapid climate change.
