NAB set to file references against Raja Pervaiz, Memon next week

ISLAMABAD: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) is set to file corruption references against top Pakistan People’s Party leaders--former Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf and former Sindh Minister for Information Sharjeel Memon--next week in the Accountability Court.

According to NAB, the final touches were being given to the references against ex-Prime Minister in Rental Power Plant (RPP) scam and former Provincial Minister Sharjeel Memon for corruption & corrupt practices in Information Department, Government of Sindh, by creating fake bills at exorbitant rates, which is expected to be filed by coming Tuesday or Wednesday.

The NAB Executive Board, in its  last week meeting, had already go ahead signal to file a reference against Raja Pervaiz Ashraf in Rental Power Plant scam and against former Provincial Minister Sharjeel Memon for corruption & corrupt practices. 

NAB hae prepared a reference against former PM Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, ex-Secretary, Ministry of Water and Power Shahid Rafi, and others (M/S Young Gen Power Case) and in this case, the accused persons were alleged for misuse of authority by signing the contract without the approval of NPGCL and without approval of Tariff from Nepra in violation of its rules, thus caused a loss of Rs503.62 million to the national exchequer.    

The second corruption reference was decided to file against Sherjeel Memon and others, and in this case, the accused persons were alleged for corruption & corrupt practices by creating fake bills causing a loss of Rs3,279,177,029 to the national exchequer.

It is to be mentioned here that NAB had already filed five reference against former Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, who allowed the RPP when he was Minister for Water and Power during the tenure of Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani as a prime minister. Two references against him in multi-billion RPP scam were filed in the Accountability Court last year.

Sources in NAB told The News that on 17.08.2009, a summary was approved and authorised for submission to the ECC of the cabinet which contains misleading facts and misrepresentation.

In this summary, it was stated that the terms and conditions of the bidding envisaging 7% advance and confirmed SBLC could not be honoured due to difficulties in financing; therefore, revised in consultation with the Finance Division to 14% advance and GOP’s sovereign guarantee.
