From August 13 to August 15, people of Karachi have officially been barred from bathing in the sea or ‘one-wheeling’ on the city’s roads, as per an order passed by the Sindh government on Thursday.

The move comes as a precautionary measure for the August 14 Independence Day celebrations and the ban, imposed under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, has been implemented with a view to curbing untoward incidents that have become a common occurrence on public holidays.

The notification issued regarding bathing by the seaside states, “The Commissioner Karachi Division has reported that…most Karachiites celebrate this day at beaches. Therefore, the commissioner has requested to impose ban under section 144 CrPC on bathing/swimming at the beaches/seaside of Karachi for three days, i.e. August 13,14, and 15.”

“The government is satisfied that in order to avoid any untoward incident of drowning which may occur due to swimming/bathing in the sea, it is necessary to take immediate measures. Therefore, the government of Sindh, in exercise of the powers conferred under Section 144 (6) CrPC, hereby imposes a ban on swimming/bathing at the beaches/seasides within the territorial limits of Karachi Division for a period of three days, w.e.f August 13 to August 15.”

As for the ban on one-wheeling, the home department issued a notification that stated, “Most Karachiites, especially youngsters, are used to celebrating this day by one-wheeling on motorcycles/scooters. There is also the apprehension that miscreants can set their targets on motorcycles/scooters which may cause loss of lives. Therefore, the commissioner Karachi has requested to impose ban u/s 144 CrPC on riding of one wheeling of motorcycles/scooters in the limits of Karachi for three days, i.e. August 13,14, and 15.”
