Citizens fined for littering public places
LAHORE
Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) issued 360 challans in 10 days to the citizens involved in violating Punjab Local Government (Amended) Act 2016, particularly by littering public places.
Officials said fine worth Rs 101,000 was imposed on the citizens not abiding by the company’s standard instructions regarding disposal of solid waste across the City.
The 360 challans were issued within 10 days, from June 21 to July 31, 2016, after LWMC started imposing fine under Punjab Local Government (Amended ) Act 2016 last month, officials said.
The officials said that a special enforcement wing had been established which comprised six enforcement inspectors who responded to observations and complaints registered by citizens or any other source.
“Imposition of fine on citizens violating standard instructions for disposal of waste will help prevent citizens littering” said Managing Director Bilal Mustafa Syed.
“There is dire need on part of around 10 million residents of the City to play their role by developing habit of using containers and bins as 10,000 sanitary workers are already helping them get rid of 5,600 tonnes of filth they produced on daily basis”, he added.
Moreover, the LWMC MD visited China Scheme, Rasheedpura and some other northern localities of the Lahore which are considered problematic areas in terms of sanitation. Bilal Mustafa along with senior officials and field staff met union council chairmen and the residents to listen to their waste related concerns.
He directed the Turkish companies concerned to strategically resolve the issue of heap piles in open plots and work out on covering low-lying open points being used to dump waste. He directed the field officers to contact Wasa and district departments help resolve issues related to sewage.
