KARACHI: Sindh’s women swimmers overshadowed departmental teams to clinch their maiden title while Army defended the men’s crown at the 54th National Swimming Championship which concluded at DHA Lahore on Sunday.
Sindh finished the women’s slots at the summit with 299 points which they claimed by virtue of five gold, eight silver and 12 bronze medals.
Army (182 points) wrapped up their journey at the second spot with nine gold, two silver and two bronze medals.
WAPDA (171 points) ended third with four gold and five silver medals.
Punjab (96 points) claimed two silver and four bronze and Navy (56 points) snared one gold, two silver and one bronze.
Islamabad (17 points) and Higher Education Commission (9 points) failed to win any medal.
Olympian Kiran Khan of Army was declared the best swimmer of the three-day competitions.
Kiran, who featured in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, captured five gold medals and one bronze.
She set a new national record in the 50 butterfly competitions.
Army retained the men’s crown by securing 347 points through ten gold, ten silver and four bronze medals.
WAPDA (306 points) ended second with nine gold, five silver and six bronze medals.
Sindh (137 points) finished third with two silver and eight bronze medals.
They were followed by Punjab (50, 2 silver, 1 bronze).
Navy, Balochistan, HEC, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Islamabad did not get any medal.
Haseeb Tariq of WAPDA was declared the best swimmer as he won six gold medals. He set a record in 50m butterfly.
