QUETTA: An important commander of Al-Qaeda for Balochistan and south Punjab, Omar Abdul Latif alias Luqman, was killed in a raid by security forces in the Chaghi District near the Pak-Afghan border on Sunday.
Balochistan Home Minister Mir Sarfaraz Bugti, while addressing a press conference, said that acting on a tip off, security forces conducted an operation during which the wife and two children of the Al-Qaeda commander were also taken into custody. The wife of the Al-Qaeda commander was identified as Tayyaba alias Freeha Baji.
“Security personnel are interrogating the commander’s wife,” Bugti said, adding, “The Al-Qaeda commander had fled from neighbouring Afghanistan to Pakistan eight or 10 months back.”
The home minister further said that Omar Abdul Latif was striving to establish the Al-Qaeda Subcontinent Centre in the area.
Bugti said that as part of the National Action Plan (NAP), an operation was underway against terrorists and terrorist organisations in Balochistan. He added that the situation in the province had now improved as a result of successful actions by security forces. “Terrorism will not be tolerated and strict action will be taken against terrorists,” he said.
Earlier, intelligence agencies conducted an operation in Quetta’s Sarwar Town area and detained a terrorist involved in attacks on the General Headquarters (GHQ) and offices of intelligence agencies.
INP adds from Khuzdar: Armed men on Sunday gunned down two persons over old rivalry in Khuzdar.
Levies sources said that armed accused opened fire at their opponents in the Garesha area, killing two of them on the spot and escaped after committing the dual murder.
