People are talking about

By our correspondents
July 24, 2016

— the proposal by the Senate that July 8th be named as Edhi Day and how it will be a befitting tribute to the great humanitarian so it can remind those who tend to forget. People say the idea is a good one but it should also be stipulated that it will not be a holiday but a day to motivate others to follow the example he set because we already have too many holidays for a developing country.

— the news that the government of Punjab has enacted an ordinance banning the employment of children and defined strict regulations for the employment of adolescents aged 15-18. People say Pakistan is near the top of the list of countries where child labour is widely prevalent, so this was a necessary step to curb the exploitation of children and adolescents in hazardous or illegal industries but whether the law is implemented or not remains to be seen.

— the increasing number of deaths of children in Tharpakar being reported and how this belies the claim by the provincial government that the situation is under control because of the welfare projects it has undertaken in this neglected area. People say it would be better if the funds spent on expensive advertising on the electronic media about imaginary ‘good work’ were utilised for the benefit of this neglected area instead of the political entities blowing their own trumpet.

— the ‘honour killing’ of a social media sensation and how it has exposed our society for its hypocrisy and double standards that are now becoming more and more apparent. People say the brothers of the deceased continued to support her because of her generosity to the family without feeling dishonoured by her actions for a couple of years before the incident, so in all probability they were incited by outside influences to carry out this dastardly act of silencing her forever.

 — the fact that the Opposition parties are determined to put the ruling party in the dock over the Panama Papers but do not have the necessary commitment to join hands and act together. People say with each party voicing different opinions and taking a rigid stand on its own opinion there are bound to be disagreements and if they want to succeed they should show more tolerance and understanding to the position the other has taken. — I.H.
