Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab and Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) Managing Director Tariq Ali Nizamani oversaw the Eidul Azha cleanup operations on Monday.

The mayor visited all seven districts to monitor the collection and disposal of animal waste. Under the SSWMB’s supervision, the authorities disposed of over 76,000 tonnes of offal in trenches at the landfill sites and the Sharafi garbage transfer station (GTS).

Wahab informed the media that the city administration had begun washing major roads with rosewater to eliminate stench and pollution and teams had been carrying out disinfection spraying, lime sprinkling and fumigation.

He stated that since the first day of Eid when sacrifices began, he and the SSWMB team remained on the ground to ensure that the citizens did not face inconvenience. He acknowledged that while the system had improved, there was always room for further improvement.

The mayor praised efforts of the ground staff and field workers for performing their duties diligently in extreme weather conditions. In areas where he noticed shortcomings such as New Karachi, he immediately took corrective action by deploying additional machinery and issuing show-cause notices to negligent contractors and companies.

He confirmed that all collection points were being cleared every night, and the operation to lift and bury offal would continue until late Tuesday night. The city administration was also clearing animal remains and garbage, and treating cleared points with lime and fumigation, he explained.

Wahab thanked the media for highlighting operational gaps, which helped the administration take prompt action. He also recognised the active role of municipal bodies and elected local representatives across the city.

According to the SSWMB, over 38,000 tonnes of offal were transported to Jam Chakro, more than 30,000 tonnes to Gond Pass, and around 8,000 tonnes to the Sharafi GTS. The board’s helpline and mobile app received nearly 3,000 complaints, 94.4 per cent of which had already been resolved, and action was under way to resolve the remaining complaints.
