GCU conducts cleanup, awareness drive
Government College University (GCU) observed World Environment Day 2025 under the global theme "Ending Plastic Pollution" here on Thursday.
The day was jointly observed by the GCU's Environment Protection Society (EPS) and the Sustainable Development Study Centre. The university’s cleanup drive and awareness campaign drew active participation from students, faculty members, and volunteers. The campaign commenced with a cleanup drive on the GCU campus and later moved to Anarkali Market, where EPS members interacted with shopkeepers, customers, and members of the public. Students highlighted the adverse impacts of plastic pollution on human health, wildlife, and ecosystems. Awareness brochures were distributed, and participants encouraged the adoption of eco-friendly alternatives. A “Zero Plastic Pledge” was taken by community members including vendors and shoppers. GCU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Omer Chaudhry lauded the students and faculty for their contributions toward a plastic-free campus.
He emphasised the urgency of addressing plastic pollution as a critical environmental concern. He appreciated that the campaign itself was entirely plastic-free. No plastic-based banners, waste bags, or other materials were used, aligning the initiative with its environmental message.
