Four die as over 3,000 cases rock India in Covid resurgence

NEW DELHI: India is witnessing a fresh surge in Covid -19 cases, with active infections rising to 3,395 and four virus-related deaths reported in the last 24 hours as of Saturday, May 31.

The highest number of cases has been reported from Kerala, followed by Maharashtra and Delhi, according to the Union Health Ministry. Despite the spike, officials have stated that the majority of infections are mild and manageable at home, and there is no immediate cause for concern.

Kerala currently has 1,336 active cases. Maharashtra recorded 68 new cases, including 30 in Mumbai and 15 in the Pune Municipal Corporation limits, bringing its total active caseload to 467. Delhi also reported a fatality, a 60-year-old woman who tested positive for COVID-19 while being treated for acute intestinal obstruction.

Karnataka recorded another death, a 63-year-old man with multiple comorbidities, including cancer and pulmonary TB, who had been fully vaccinated and was undergoing chemotherapy. This brings Karnataka’s total COVID-related deaths this year to seven, with six of the deceased having underlying health conditions.

The Karnataka health department has issued advisories urging citizens to wear masks in crowded places, maintain social distancing, and practice good hygiene. With schools scheduled to reopen in June, the government has directed both public and private schools to implement necessary precautions to safeguard children’s health.

Meanwhile, Odisha reported two new cases, taking the total number of active infections in the state to seven, all in stable condition. Across the country, 1,435 people recovered from COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, offering some relief amid the growing numbers. Health officials continue to monitor the situation closely and encourage the public to remain calm but vigilant.
