Islamabad:Pakistan and Nepal on Tuesday agreed to enhance cooperation to mitigate the adverse impacts of climate change.

The agreement came as Ambassador of Nepal Ms Rita Dhital called on Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination Dr Musadik Malik in his office here. The minister emphasised Pakistan’s longstanding commitment to regional peace and stability, insisting the country has been a victim of terrorism and unprovoked aggression.

He said that Pakistan speaks from a position of clarity and dignity and, while it earnestly sought peace, the desire must not be misconstrued as a sign of weakness. Referring to the recent regional tensions, Dr Malik expressed regret over the tragic loss of life on both sides, attributing the escalation to India’s failed attempt to assert hegemonic dominance in the region. He said he was happy that peace had been restored. Ambassador Dhital conveyed Nepal’s relief at the de-escalation between the two nuclear-armed neighbours and acknowledged the challenging circumstances faced by Pakistan.

She praised Pakistan’s leadership in global climate advocacy and its consistent efforts in environmental protection. The ambassador also extended a formal invitation to Dr. Musadik Malik to attend the inaugural session of a regional Climate Dialogue Forum to be hosted in Nepal. She noted that the event would culminate in a non-binding declaration and will include participation from climate ministers across South Asia and other regions.
