Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab met with the mayor of Shanghai, Gong Zheng, to discuss avenues of mutual cooperation and investment.
The meeting focused on strengthening bilateral relations and exploring opportunities in key sectors, including infrastructure development, waste-to-energy projects, energy, and urban services in Karachi.
Mayor Wahab extended a warm invitation to Chinese investors to participate in Karachi’s ongoing development initiatives, highlighting the city’s potential as a hub for international collaboration.
In a move to further strengthen educational and cultural ties, he announced scholarships for Chinese students through the Karachi Metropolitan University programmes.
Additionally, Mayor Wahab announced the development of a public space in Karachi dedicated to honouring the people of China and their great leader, Chairman Mao Zedong, the First Chairman of the Chinese Communist Party.
Both leaders expressed a strong commitment to fostering long-term cooperation between Karachi and Shanghai and agreed to explore further opportunities for collaboration across multiple sectors of mutual interest.
Mayor Wahab was accompanied by a delegation comprising S. M. Afzal Zaidi, municipal commissioner; Gulzar Abro, financial advisor, Karachi Metropolitan Corporation and Mehdi Maloof, senior director of culture and sports.
During the meeting, Mayor Wahab also presented a traditional Ajrak and a souvenir to Mayor Gong Zheng, symbolizing the friendship between the two cities.
This high-level meeting marks an important step toward deepening city-to-city relations and building a framework for a sustained and dynamic partnership between Karachi and Shanghai.
