The Sindh government on Tuesday decided to cancel the registration of defective and unsafe commercial vehicles as part of a broader initiative to modernise the province’s transport system.
The decision was taken during a key meeting of the Transport and Mass Transit Department held at the Sindh Secretariat, chaired by Sindh Senior Minister for Transport Sharjeel Inam Memon.
Officials confirmed that the government would launch a new route next week using Green Line and Orange Line buses, while also preparing to introduce a special Pink EV Scooter scheme aimed at facilitating women commuters. According to Menon, the scheme would be accessible to working women and students, provided they possess a valid driving licence.
The meeting was attended by Secretary Transport Asad Zamin, Managing Director of the Sindh Mass Transit Authority Kamal Dayo, Project Director of the People’s Bus Service Sohaib Shafiq, and other senior officials. Detailed discussions were held on the status of ongoing transport projects and road safety measures.
One of the key outcomes of the meeting was the decision to develop a modern commercial vehicle inspection system. Minister Memon directed the department to expedite the establishment of Motor Vehicle Inspection (MVI) centres along the National Highway and Super Highways to ensure that only roadworthy vehicles were allowed to enter urban areas.
He stated that 10 MVI centres were being established across Sindh, with two already operational in Karachi. Three more were under development in the city, while five others were being set up in different districts. “These inspection centres will play a vital role in ensuring vehicle fitness and reducing accidents,” said Memon.
In addition, the minister announced the arrival of 34 new electric buses and five double-decker buses in Karachi by June, with an additional 100 buses expected later the same month. He also instructed the department to take necessary steps for the introduction of 500 electric taxis in the initial phase of a broader rollout.
“Our goal is to provide affordable, environment-friendly, and reliable transportation to the public. Sindh’s transport system is stepping into a new era—one that embraces modern technology and prioritises public convenience,” Memon added.
