Initiative launched to solve Model Town dispute

PESHAWAR: Commissioner, Peshawar Division, Riaz Khan Mahsud has launched an initiative to resolve the decades-old Regi Model Town dispute, which has remained unsettled for 32 years.

Acting on provincial government directives, the commissioner has sought the nomination of focal persons from the district administrations of Peshawar and Khyber, as well as the Peshawar Development Authority (PDA), to facilitate negotiations. Jirgas with all stakeholders will be held this week to devise a sustainable resolution.

Chairing a meeting, Commissioner Riaz Mahsud reviewed the longstanding issue in detail with Director General PDA and other officials. The meeting underscored the urgency of breaking the deadlock and ensuring a practical solution.

It was decided that separate jirgas under the commissioner’s leadership would be convened this week to engage all stakeholders in meaningful consultations. “We are committed to finding a lasting and just resolution to this dispute through dialogue and consensus,” Riaz Mahsud said.

The Regi Model Town project has been stalled for over three decades due to ownership disputes and administrative hurdles, leaving thousands awaiting resolution. The Commissioner’s initiative marks a renewed push to settle the matter once and for all.
