Punjab govt boosts security protocols for Chinese nationals

LAHORE: The Punjab government has intensified safety protocols for the 2,366 Chinese nationals residing in the province, deploying 9,803 security personnel for their protection, according to a recent report by the Special Branch (SB) and the Special Protection Unit (SPU).

Implementation committee meetings took place after the issuance of updated Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). These SOPs have been translated into Urdu to ensure compliance and implementation throughout the province. District-wise threat assessments have categorized areas as high, medium, or low risk to optimize resource allocation.

The Ministry of Interior (MOI) organized a seminar on November 14, 2024, for security officers and focal persons to enhance their understanding of SOPs. Deputy Commissioners (DCs) across Punjab have been directed to conduct similar sessions locally. The Services and General Administration Department (S&GAD) has expanded its bulletproof vehicle pool, adding three 29-seater bulletproof coasters and three 14-seater vans in its entourage/

Further, biometric devices have been activated for FNSC Dashboard users, with strict instructions for vigilance using platforms such as WeChat to prevent data breaches. Technical surveillance has been reinforced around Chinese clusters, with protocols devised for visits to non-CPEC projects. The Home Department is developing a web portal for data entry and retrieval regarding Chinese nationals.

All hotels have been registered under the Hotel Eye app, with plans to regulate the Airbnb app in collaboration with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA). Stricter registration measures have been imposed at all entry and exit points.

As part of continuous improvement, feedback from 2,023 Chinese nationals has been recorded, alongside measures to address shortcomings highlighted in the National Counter Terrorism Authority (NACTA) reports, particularly for non-CPEC projects.

Enhanced airport security protocols and further technological upgrades remain under consideration to ensure comprehensive safety and convenience for Chinese residents in Punjab. The provincial government reaffirms its commitment to safeguarding foreign nationals and strengthening ties between Pakistan and China.
