‘Strategy to be devised for promotion of cotton cultivation’
LAHORE:The suggestions have been sought from stakeholders and in the light of these suggestions an action plan will be finalised to promote cotton cultivation across the Punjab province, Secretary Agriculture Punjab Iftikhar Ali Sahoo stated this while presiding over a meeting at the Agriculture House here on Friday.
The provincial secretary agriculture stated that early sowing of cotton results in higher per-acre yield and maximum land will be brought under cotton cultivation. Besides this, only approved varieties of high-yielding cotton seeds will be sown, he added.
He further emphasised that February and March are the most suitable months for cotton cultivation. At the village and union council levels, unutilised land will be prioritised for early cotton sowing. Lands vacated after the harvesting of oilseed crops will also be utilised for cotton cultivation. Additionally, cotton will be sown in between potatoes and sugarcane crops unutilised area, he described.
The meeting was attended by Additional Secretary Task Force Punjab M Shabbir Ahmed Khan, Agricultural Consultant Dr Anjum Ali and Directors General of Agriculture Ch Abdul Hameed, Naveed Asmat Kahloon, and Dr Abdul Qayyum among other officials.
