PM calls another meeting of political leaders on CPEC

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has convened yet another huddle of parliamentary group leaders on Thursday (May 28) to deliberate further on the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
The conference will commence at 11am at the PM House. The last conference that took place on May 13 remained inconclusive due to the gory incident of the Safoora Chowrangi and the prime minister had to rush to Karachi on the same day.
The last conference agreed to set up an oversight committee of parliament to monitor the CPEC project after Federal Minister Ahsan Iqbal addressed the reservations of political leaders on the project.
He has gone to China to have discussions with regard to the project and is expected to return home early next week. Intriguingly, another conference was held by some disgruntled political leaders afterwards and the similar objections were repeated which were removed by the minister.
Highly placed sources reminded ‘The News’ that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has publicly opposed the CPEC and even protested to Chinese President Xi Jinping against it during his visit to China last week. There have been reports that Indian intelligence agency RAW has established special desk and allocated huge amount to subvert the project. Keeping in the view the government is also looking this aspect in opposition of the CPEC. It is likely that oversight committee would be announced in between the next conference, the sources reminded.
