PESHAWAR: The Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Friday issued notices to the federal government and other relevant authorities to respond to a petition filed against the slow internet speed across the country.
A two-member bench comprising Justice Wiqar Ahmad and Justice Kamran Hayat Miankhel heard the case. The petitioner’s lawyer, Nauman Mohibullah Kakakhel, argued before the court that internet services had become increasingly sluggish without any formal orders. He pointed out that during protests or unrest, internet speeds were deliberately reduced to the extent that messages cannot be downloaded, videos cannot be uploaded, and even voice messages could not be sent.
The lawyer pointed out that the poor internet service was causing inconvenience to citizens and severely impacting businesses reliant on digital connectivity.Justice Wiqar Ahmad inquired whether the government denied slowing down internet services, while Justice Kamran Hayat Miankhel noted the distinction between the two types of internet services i.e. landline-based internet, which had slowed down but continued to function, and mobile internet, which was more adversely affected. The bench directed the petitioner to provide details about the issue and submit relevant material at the next hearing.
