Sindh growers slam federal govt for planning to build six canals on Indus
HYDERABAD: The Joint Action Committee of Sindh growers staged a rally against the federal government’s project for six canals on the River Indus.
The farmers’ rally reached the Hyderabad Press Club via Gymkhana and Old Campus. The participants carried placards and banners with slogans against the new cannals
The farmers from Hyderabad, Thatta, Badin, Sajawal, Jamshoro, Tando Allahyar and Mirpurkhas divisions came in caravans and raised slogans against the project.
Growers’ leaders Syed Meeran Muhammad Shah, Nawab Zubair Talpur, Syed Zain Shah, Zulfiqar Yousafani and others, while speaking on the occasion, criticised the plan as a conspiracy to make Sindh barren, as already the 1991 water accord is not being implemented and Irsa is not even providing the due share of water to Sindh.
President Sindh United Party Zain Shah alleged that the Chashma Right Bank Canal, Kuchi Canal, Rainey Canal, Greater Thal Canal, Cholistan Canal and Thar Canal were approved by President Asif Ali Zardari because the government that he got in the election in 2024 was paid for.
He said Zardari had compromised on the rights of Sindh, this would not be tolerated. A large number of officials and members of the Sindh Abadgar Ittehad, Sindh Abadgar Board and other organisations, including the Chamber of Agriculture and Commerce, participated in the Joint Action Committee rally.
