The recent efforts by certain political parties and the government’s decision to review and lower electricity bills are commendable. As a result, some independent power producers (IPPs) have been compelled to reduce their electricity rates, which is a welcome relief for the public, who are struggling to manage the soaring costs of living.
Currently, electricity bills consume 30-40 per cent of many people’s monthly incomes, which is unsustainable in these times of unprecedented inflation. To provide lasting relief, the government should also revisit the electricity billing structure, which includes excessive taxes, capacity charges, and tiered billing slabs. Removing these slabs and significantly reducing taxes would help ease the burden on lower-income households, allowing them to experience immediate financial relief.
