City receives drizzle; wet spell to continue

LAHORE : Moderate to light but scattered rain was witnessed in the City here on Wednesday while Met office predicted similar weather conditions for the next 24 hours.

The rain started in the afternoon and continued till night in spans in various areas. On the instructions of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, Wasa MD Ghafran Ahmed visited the low-lying areas and different ponding points. He visited Qurtaba Chowk, reviewed the drainage operation and ordered clearing low-lying areas by using all resources.

Wasa MD gave instructions to clear all the highways. He said he would continue making surprise visits to monitor the drainage operation.

Met officials warned that torrential rains may generate pluvial flood/inundation in low-lying areas of Sindh, Balochistan and southern Punjab. Flash flooding in local nullahs/streams & hill torrents of DG Khan, Dadu, Karachi, Hyderabad, Kalat, Khuzdar, Jaffarabad, Sibbi, Naseerabad, Barkhan, Loralai, Awaran, Panjgur, Washuk, Mastung and Lasbella. Heavy rains may trigger landslides in Murree, Galliyat, Mansehra, Kohistan, Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Buner, Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan. Urban flooding in low lying areas of Multan, Sahiwal, Lahore, Sheikhupura, Kasur, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Islamabad /Rawalpindi, Nowshera, Swabi and Peshawar.

They said deep depression currently located over Nagarparkar and adjoining coastal areas of Sindh, which was likely to move west/southwest during next 24 hours. Due to this weather system, strong monsoon currents were penetrating in the country (especially southern parts). They added that a westerly wave was also likely to affect upper parts of the country from today.

Rainfall was recorded at several cities across the country. Wednesday’s maximum temperature was recorded at Nokkundi where mercury reached 45°C, while in Lahore, it was 33.2°C and minimum was 24°C.
